About Us:

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

 

Overview of role:

ZSL is seeking an experienced, innovative and adaptable individual to oversee and develop our multidisciplinary Conservation Programme in Indonesia. In this exciting and challenging role the successful applicant will be required to demonstrate leadership as well a supporting the Country Manager in the management and development of the Indonesian team and their work in line with ZSL Indonesia and wider programmatic strategies. This person will grow and manage ZSL Indonesia existing grant portfolio so that funds can be raised in a timely manner to implement ZSL’s conservation strategies.

 

The post-holder will report to the Country Manager in Indonesia and support them in the management of a team of staff based in Indonesia. Main responsibilities will include:

  • Management and support project implementation and development.
  • Oversee streamlining staff management and administration.
  • Manage the production of strategies for programme development and grant writing.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with project collaborators, stakeholders and donors.
  • Provide technical advice to develop the conservation and management capacity of our incountry team.
  • Support the liaison with the programme team to coordinate cross-Society programme activities.
  • Represent ZSL at international meetings, to promote ZSL Indonesia and its conservation work.

 

Person Specification:

The post-holder should have a proven track record in conservation project development in Asia and relevant experience and/or a higher degree in an appropriate subject such as conservation biology, environmental economics, conservation/development policy or a related discipline. Candidates should also have:

  • Proven extensive staff management experience in a conservation and or development setting
  • A good understanding of biodiversity and wider conservation issues in Asia.
  • Experience working in the region is highly desirable in particular in Indonesia. 
  • Excellent written and spoken English,
  • Ability to speak Indonesian or Malay, is a plus.
  • Strong organisational, interpersonal and presentation skills.
  • Proven grant-writing and management ability is essential, particularly experience of bi-lateral donors such as DFID and USAID.

 

Please Note: The position will be based at ZSL’s offices in Bogor - Indonesia and will involve significant travel to relevant countries including our Main offices in London, Regents Park.
