Description

We are seeking a motivated out going marine biologist to oversee all aspects of Seamarc Coral Propagation Project and its research programs, preferred start date, the 20st August 2014.

The role involves :

  • Manage and maintain all aspects of the Coral Propagation Program;
  • Manage coral frame database and photo update for guest sponsored frames;
  • Conduct frame maintenance and monitoring;
  • Communication of work to guests and journalists;
  • Regular written reports (in English) concerning all activities and targets;
  • Management of interns/volunteers;

The successful candidate will have:

  • Experience in marine conservation and research, with specific experience in coral biology;
  • Knowledge and experience of coral propagation techniques;
  • Experience of project management and staff supervision;
  • A qualified diver, divemaster prefered.
  • Strong swimmer;
  • Experience in awareness and education programs;
  • Academic qualifications in a relevant discipline (Marine Biology, Environmental Science …) MSc / PhD preferred.

The post is an excellent opportunity for an experienced individual to work within an environmental consultancy firm and be based at a Four Seasons Resort within the beautiful atolls of the Maldives.

Job Description

As the Coral Biologist, your scope of work will include:

  • Being responsible for the Coral Propagation Project at the Four Seasons resort Kuda Huraa. This includes:
    • Collecting and propagating Coral;
    • Creating coral frames;
    • Running all guest orientated coral & coral frame activities;
    • Relocation of coral frames where appropriate;
    • Conducting all coral frame maintenance and predation removal of 1500 coral frames;
    • Conducting all coral frame monitoring of 1500 coral frames;
    • Taking photo updates of guest sponsored frames and updating website;
    • Write monthly progress reports for submission to the MDC manager;
    • Maintaining coral frame databases;
    • Conducting guided snorkels for guests and visiting journalists when required;
    • Conducting and managing any and all coral research studies;
    • Conducting marine life briefing and debriefing with divers and snorkelers;
    • Maintaining small on site aquariums;
    • Carry out marine life presentations and updating them based on researched information;
    • Participate in the training, teaching and organization of tests of marine biology course to Dive Master and MDC apprentices;
    • Create new projects and guest orientated activities focusing on the use of coral frames;
    • Other research programs may be added to your work program in time;
    • Additional activities may be added in time to suit overall resort’s objectives;

You will be expected to follow the Four Seasons Service and Culture Standards at all times, a copy of which will be provided on your first day at work.

Working with Four Seasons

  • As the position is within Four Seasons, employees are required to follow the Four Seasons Service and Culture Standards at all times, a copy of which will be provided upon selection for the position but prior to your acceptance.
  • Subject to Four Seasons dress and grooming code.
  • Participate in any Four Season resort staff training sessions as required.
  • Ensure that guests are greeted by staff on arrival, guiding them around the MDC and explaining the various programs currently being conducted.
  • Attend the Managers 'Cocktails Event when invited to meet guests of the resort.
  • Explain and promote the projects carried out by Seamarc and Four Seasons to any visitors to the MDC.

Additional projects and responsibilities may be added in time.

Salary and benefits

  • The salary for this position is $1000 USD per month plus commission.
  • Return flights from the applicant’s point of relocation.
  • 34 days annual leave, 10 days paid sick leave, 10 days bereavement leave and one day off per week.
