Description

About Us:

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL), a charity founded in 1826, is a world-renowned centre of excellence for conservation science and applied conservation. ZSL’s mission is to promote and achieve the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. This is realised by carrying out field conservation and research in over 50 countries across the globe and through education and awareness-raising at our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, inspiring people to take conservation action.

Overview of role:

ZSL is seeking a Conservation for Communities Social Marketing Officer to develop and oversee the implementation of social marketing tools and approaches that in-country teams and partner communities can use to increase community-level adoption of three core behaviours in support of our marine conservation activities: (a) increasing net recycling in the Net-Works project; (b) increasing the size and effectiveness of no-take zones (marine protected areas); (c) increasing the size and effectiveness of mangrove protection and restoration.

The main responsibilities of the position will be to work closely with relevant in-country teams and project managers in Philippines, Cameroon and Mozambique (amongst others) to design, implement and evaluate an effective and scalable social marketing campaign tailored towards target communities that reinforces our existing conservation activities. The successful applicant will develop the strategic approach; develop and produce relevant materials to be used by our field staff and community-level groups; undertake capacity development of relevant teams; and report on the activities and their impact to relevant donors.

The successful candidate will be:

The position reports to the Conservation for Communities Technical Specialist. The position is part of the Conservation for Communities team (Global Marine & Freshwater Programme) and will be expected to liaise closely with the Discovery & Learning team.

  • Educated to master’s degree in social marketing, behaviour change or relevant social science, or equivalent in a related discipline or have equivalent level of proven work experience in social marketing and capacity development.
  • Additional language skills (particularly Portuguese, French and/or Filipino) are advantageous.
  • Independently driven and show initiative; with strong administrative skills;
  • Able to demonstrate excellent inter-personal skills and have good time and organisational management skills.

Please Note: The successful applicant will be based at the Centre for Ecology and Conservation, University of Exeter Cornwall Campus in Penryn, with 3-4 days per month in London at ZSL offices in Regent’s Park. The successful applicant will be expected to travel extensively.

To Apply:

Applicants should send their completed Equality of Opportunity Monitoring Form, CV, and a covering letter detailing relevant experience and skills and stating why they want the position, by email to ZSL’s HR Department (hr@zsl.org). We regret that we will only be able to contact applicants who have been selected for interview.

Closing Date: Midnight Tuesday 30th June 2015

Anticipated Interview Date: W/c. 13th July 2015

The Zoological Society of London is a charity registered in England and Wales: no. 208728.
