Conservation and Research Officer

Background

The “Society for the Protection of Prespa” (www.spp.gr) is a locally based NGO, promoting conservation and sustainable development in the Prespa National Park, Greece as well as the transboundary Prespa region (Greece, Albania, FYRoM). With twenty years of experience, its activities range from research on specific conservation issues, wetland and environmental management, public awareness and education, trans-boundary cooperation and lobbying for the protection of the Transboundary Prespa Park.


Role


We are seeking to recruit a full time Conservation and Research Officer who will be responsible for the smooth functioning of all aspects of the conservation programme of SPP, will support project implementation and will be in charge or participate in an array of fieldwork and conservation management activities. Additionally, he/she will be managing and analyzing data, will be compiling relevant reports and will be participating in the writing of scientific papers.


PROFILE


Ideally the candidate must have:
* An advanced university degree in a relevant scientific subject (e.g. wetland management, conservation biology, wildlife management and/or protected area management)
* Minimum of three years experience in conservation and management projects with a proven track record in participation in relevant applied research studies
Essential:
* Ability to asses, analyse and synthesize information from disparate sources. Care and attention to detail. Excellent skills in writing concisely in a scientific style in English. Ability to work to timeframes and under pressure. Standard computer skills (Excel, Word etc)
* Ability in designing conservation research projects
* Ability to network, motivate and collaborate with others
* Contribution in scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals
* Knowledge of basic statistics
* Experience of conservation action in the field

Desirable:
* Knowledge of advanced statistics
* Identification skills for European birds and especially waterbirds
* Strong ability to present written arguments, good listening, facilitation and communications skills
* Ability to adapt to living in rural areas
* A track record of work in environmental NGOs
* Experience in international environmental policy and governance

Languages:

Greek and English are the main working languages of SPP. For this position, complete fluency in English is essential. Fluency in French or German is desirable. Knowledge of Greek and/or other Balkan languages is highly desirable.


This is a full time and open-ended position, based in the offices of SPP in Laimos, Prespa. The position may require frequent travel in the other two littoral states of the Prespa basin (Albania and FYROM) and other Mediterranean and European destinations.


Salary range: €25000-29000 gross
