An exciting opportunity to work in the important field of commercial recycling and waste, monitoring and improving commercial recycling schemes, developing and building on relationships with new and existing commercial customers, collating and auditing data and developing effective promotional campaigns.

This role at Bedford Borough Council is ideal for a recent graduate or early careerist with a background and interest in environmental subjects, great communication skills and experience in providing excellent customer service.

Bedford Borough is located within the East of England between Milton Keynes and Cambridge. It benefits from fast rail links with London and is well placed for access from both the M1 and A1. The local authority is a unitary council and currently has a population of 168,751 with 72,900 households. The Borough itself is largely centred on the town of Bedford which sits along both sides of the River Ouse, but it also encompasses a large rural area to the north of Bedford bordering with the neighbouring County of Northampton. The Business Development Team’s main functions are to manage the Council’s corporate Energy and Water supply contracts and deliver a business generation service for the department, including commercial refuse and recycling, grounds maintenance and street cleansing services and other services that generate income. The team is based in the Councils main office, Borough Hall, located on Cauldwell Street in Bedford and consists of 3 members of staff managed by a team leader.

We need:

A confident, enthusiastic and engaging communicator to work with local businesses. Your role will include visiting commercial customers, monitoring and advising on general and recyclable waste and developing promotional materials and activities.

Using your excellent data management skills, you will monitor the performance of recycling collection schemes for commercial customers, deliver improvements to services and assist in the wider services redesign project.

You are:

  • Educated to A-Level or Degree level in an environmental subject

    • or Experience working in a similar role
  • Experienced in providing excellent customer service

  • Enthusiastic about recycling and composting, with an understanding of the waste services local authorities provide

  • Highly literate and fluent in English, with excellent skills in verbal and written communication

  • Highly numerate and proficient in data analysis

  • Able to demonstrate strong skills in organisation, prioritisation and meeting deadlines

  • Able to work independently and make decisions within defined procedures

  • Able to problem solve using logical, analytical and innovative thinking

  • Proficient in IT, particularly all Microsoft Office applications

  • Experienced in maintaining accurate records, checking/auditing data for accuracy and/or compliance

  • Able to travel independently throughout the county (Driving Licence essential)

In an ideal world, you are also:

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce weekly and monthly reports on commercial waste tonnage; input, verify and audit data.

  • Identify opportunities and ideas to increase the quantity and quality of recycling from commercial customers.

    • Monitor and report on performance data

    • Visit customers – assess their needs and offer advice on how to reduce and recycle their waste

    • Work with customers to identify issues, feed back to the Commercial Services team and implement solutions

  • Respond to and action crew reports and other service performance data provided by Collection Crews

    • Ensure resolution of any identified problems
  • Apply and communicate the policies and principles contained within the Commercial Waste Operational Policy document.

  • Educate and advise customers on the commercial services available to ensure they receive the best possible service at the best price.

  • Maintain accurate electronic and manual records for all aspects of the post

    • Produce regular reports and statistical data

    • Assist in the production of reports as requested

  • Work alongside the refuse and recycling operational teams to ensure customer requirements are being met and any resolutions or improvements are being offered.

Salary (per annum pro rata): £21,074

Start Date: ASAP

Length of Contract: 9 months

Hours/Week: 37

Annual leave: 26 days pro rata plus public holidays

Work outside normal hours: Role requires some evening and weekend work to attend events and meetings.
