The British Antarctic Survey is looking for an experienced Model Data Analyst.
What is the role about?
You will investigate oceanographic and climate variability in the Antarctic and Arctic regions and its impacts on the wider Earth System. We run sophisticated idealised, regional and global climate and oceanographic models (including sea ice and ice shelf components) to simulate past conditions and also to predict how the climate and ocean will evolve in the future. Models are run on local and national supercomputing facilities and generate large volumes of data, and we also make extensive use of output from very large models and ensembles run externally, such as the IPCC CMIP6 ensemble.
You will be responsible for accessing, pre-processing and analysing IPCC class and similar climate model data in support of BAS researchers. You will assist scientists in preparing data for scientific publication. Other datasets, such as those used to force our models or produced by satellite remote sensing, may also require management and analysis.
You will have a degree or higher qualification in a relevant physical science subject, previous experience of programming in a linux/unix environment including familiarity with Fortran and Python, and experience of handing large data sets. Experience working with cluster based computing, cloud computing and with geophysical and ideally ocean/atmosphere/climate data is strongly desirable.
This role is full time, but we are willing to consider applications with part-time or flexible working patterns.

Purpose
- Based within the Ice Dynamics and Paleoclimate programme at our Cambridge office, you will be part of a team investigating climate variability and how we can use ice core data to more accurately project future climate changes.
- Responsible for managing our modelling infrastructure and writing code to support model users and developers.
- Process and maintain the large datasets required to force our regional models.
- Responsible for accessing and pre-processing of IPCC climate model data and other datasets, such as those produced by satellite remote sensing.
Qualification
PhD in relevant physical science or equivalent experience.
Duties
Access and process IPCC climate model data sets.
- Assist scientists in the analysis of model output and preparation of results for publication.
- Manage output from climate and ocean models and other large datasets.
- Support model users with troubleshooting and code documentation.
- Retrieve, process, and maintain large forcing data sets from other centres.
