An opportunity to shape fisheries management on the River Tweed

The River Tweed Commission (RTC) seeks an experienced manager to lead a small team based next to the River Tweed, near Melrose.  The role is as the chief executive for two organisations:

  • Clerk to the River Tweed Commission, which has the statutory responsibility for the management of the Tweed Fishery, and
  • Managing Director of The Tweed Foundation, which is a Charitable Company limited by Guarantee and which undertakes scientific studies and research on Tweed’s freshwater fish stocks.

Together, the two organisations have the responsibilities for the management, preservation and increase of all freshwater fish in the Tweed & Eye Fisheries District.

The postholder will work with the Chairman of the two organisations, other office holders, the RTC Committee and the Board of the Tweed Foundation, and has principal responsibility for the management, compliance and external communication of RTC and the Tweed Foundation.  The postholder will be expected to contribute to the debate on changes to the management of Scotland’s rivers.

You should ideally have a degree level qualification or equivalent, a strong work ethic, sound experience in a similar management role and excellent leadership qualities. An interest in rural sports and the countryside and some knowledge and understanding of the wild Atlantic Salmon sector would be advantageous. Further key skills include a solid understanding of general business practice alongside experience in dealing with a diverse range of stakeholders, including local and national government. Sound experience in budget setting and management are required, along with excellent communication and IT skills. Experience of running a charity is desirable. Fund-raising abilities are essential.

Salary will be dependent on experience and qualifications. A company vehicle, benefits and a relocation package are offered.

This post presents an opportunity for a highly committed and proactive individual with a positive approach to the issues currently facing our sector.

Please send your CV, with a covering letter explaining why this post is of interest and what you could bring to it, to Fay Hieatt at: fhieatt@rtc.org.uk by Friday 28th February 2020.  Interviews will be held in early February.
