Description

The world as we know it is a mess of injustice held in place by an entrenched global establishment. We believe that only strong social and environmental justice movements can transform the world.

People & Planet seeks to extend and strengthen this struggle through universities. We empower students to be strong organisers of radical campaigns, integrated into a broader student network and coalition of movements. We believe immensely in the significance of political education, in the strategic coordination of different efforts for justice, and in open access to skills and resources.

THE UNDOING BORDERS CAMPAIGN
Undoing Borders is a campaign for migrant justice at universities. Rather than providing truly public education, universities currently function like border check-points. They willingly monitor migrant students' and workers' status, attendance, location and contact details for the Home Office, and have been known to call immigration raids on undocumented workers who demand better conditions. They squeeze extortionate fees from migrant students, even charging international rates to long term UK residents without settled status.

Student groups running the Undoing Borders campaign have been pushing their universities to end their support for the hostile environment. Their long-term goal is to get their Vice-Chancellors to sign the 'Pledge Against the Hostile Environment', which includes commitments to ensure migrants' access to education, and to prioritise students' and workers' rights and freedoms over compliance with the Home Office. In the last academic year, they took their demands to Vice-Chancellors as well as their national representative body, Universities UK. They put migrant justice at the centre of solidarity with UCU strikes and fought back against the pressure on international students to cross picket lines for attendance requirements. Right now we're pushing universities to provide a migrant justice response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

JOB PURPOSE
As Campaigns & Movement Building Co-ordinator for Undoing Borders, you will work closely with the Campaign Manager for Undoing Borders in mobilising and supporting students around the UK who have chosen to run the campaign. You will deliver support to student groups by organising events, delivering training, and providing ongoing advice to organisers and campaigners. You will support the People & Planet network to run campaigns by conducting research, developing resources, co-ordinating communications, organising days of action, working in partnership with other organisations and supporting democratic engagement with the campaigns. We will provide you with all the training you need to undertake this role and to make the most of the internship.
