Mace Biodiversity Position – job and person specification      

 

Mace is a leading international property consultancy and contractor whose aim is to be the partner of choice for our clients. We have a strong commitment to sustainability in the built environment, and a well-developed position on sustainable design and construction delivery.

The sustainability team at Mace supports the wider business, though delivering technical advice to our project and programme teams, winning sustainability commissions and managing our environmental and community impacts.  Our team is expanding and we are seeking an ecologist to join the team to support the growth of our team and the wider business.

 

The Role

The ecologist joining the team will undertake 3 distinct roles.  The successful applicant will:

  • Assist in developing Mace’s 5 year biodiversity strategy.  Mace is currently refreshing its corporate biodiversity strategy, placing much greater emphasis on Green Infrastructure:

    • Research existing and emerging biodiversity drivers and best practice;

    • Engage with Mace business unit leads and their clients to understand opportunities to enhance biodiversity;

    • Develop biodiversity Key Performance Indicators that will enable us to report our progress;

    • Deliver communications and training on the Mace biodiversity strategy to our business leaders, delivery teams and clients.

  • Support Mace construction projects.  Mace starts around 60 new construction projects annually, typically in London and the South East. Each of these needs ecological support:

    • Work with project teams to review ecological risks and develop method statements where applicable;

    • Undertake pre-start risk assessment checks for ecological issues and advise the construction teams of suitable control measures;

    • Train construction teams as necessary on construction ecological issues;

    • Advise and guide teams on how to implement biodiversity enhancements on their project, including provision of ecological design advice;

    • Respond to ecological incidents when they occur, such as birds commencing nesting on site, and provide advice to the site team.

  • Deliver ecological consultancy services.  The successful applicant will work with the Sustainability Leadership Team to secure additional ecological work from our clients, including supporting planning applications, strategic ecological initiatives, BREEAM / CfSH assessments and where necessary protected species licencing.

The Person

The role requires both a technical and communications capability, and therefore the successful candidate will:

  • Be a full member of CIEEM with at least 5 years professional experience

  • Have excellent technical knowledge and CIEEM competencies for field surveying and ideally hold at least one protected species licence;

  • Will have experience of Ecological Impact Assessment and be familiar with CIEEM methodologies, and have experience of habitat creation and restoration;

  • Capable of self-managing and self-learning to deliver project objectives;

  • Will be passionate about the subject and an excellent written and verbal communicator able to engage people and deliver a clear and succinct vision of Mace’s biodiversity strategy;

  • Be able to provide pragmatic and creative advice and solutions;

  • Be willing to undertake business development activities for ecology / biodiversity
