Description

As part of the Forestry Commission, Forest Research (FR) is one of the world’s leading institutes in research focused on trees, woodlands and forestry and has a strong international reputation for excellent applied and interdisciplinary research.  Work is undertaken for the Forestry Commission, a number of other government departments and a wide range of other customers and clients (including research councils, the European Union, and local authorities).  Collaboration across disciplines and partnerships with other research organisations in the United Kingdom and internationally is strongly encouraged.

You will be a member of the Social and Economic Research Group (SERG), within the Centre for Ecosystems, Society and Biosecurity – one of three thematic centres within FR.  The Centre leads FR's research into biosecurity, ecosystem robustness and resilience, land use and ecosystem services, and the ways in which society values and manages trees and forests.  The research of the SERG focuses on developing understanding and practical advice on a range of social, cultural, behavioural and governance issues relating to the use, engagement with and management of British trees and forests, and wider greenspace. The group uses a range of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methodologies.  Key work areas of research for the group include: forest governance, sustainable behaviours, urban forestry, wellbeing and community engagement.

Purpose of Job

You will carry out behavioural science research to contribute to the understanding of how interventions, projects and programmes [related to woodlands and greenspace] can influence, sustain, and change the behaviours of land managers and a range of publics and stakeholders.

The key responsibilities for the role will include:

  1. Assist specific research projects and contracts with the collection of behavioural science data on the use, wellbeing benefits and management of trees and woodlands and evaluation of interventions.
  2. Assist with and conduct the analysis of quantitative data through approaches such as descriptive statistics, factor analysis, analysis of variance, and of qualitative data through thematic analysis.
  3. Contribute to project management of contracts for research and evaluation.
  4. Work with other members of the Social and Economic Research Group and in an interdisciplinary way with other scientists across FR and its partners to develop research plans, survey and interview questions and guides, and protocols for gathering and reviewing existing evidence.
  5. Interpret and report on behavioural data, including contributing to technical reports, research summaries, website and social media content, and scientific publications.
