Description

Although we are best known for our work supporting a fair planning system, The Planning Inspectorate also has a long and proud history of providing fair, open, and impartial decisions on rights of way, common land, and coastal access casework.

We are looking for people to specialise in that area, with opportunities across other casework, such as planning appeals or providing recommendations to the Secretary of State on major national infrastructure projects.

The work we do has significant impacts on people’s lives, on the communities in which they live and on the economy. Our wide range of work means we have always recruited from a range of professional backgrounds, including planning, rights of way, engineering, architecture, built heritage, environmental sciences, landscape architecture and the law.

You need to be an accomplished professional with energy, relevant skills, and a commitment to public service.

You will be joining a small team of dedicated Specialist Casework Inspectors carrying out primarily rights of way, common land, and coastal access casework.

This home-based role offers opportunities to travel across England conducting site visits, hearings and inquires, balancing the views and interests of the public, landowners, and occupiers about access to their local commons, coastline, and public rights of way network.

We are looking for someone with substantial experience as a rights of way practitioner, or in a related field, who wants to progress their professional development and move in a different direction. You will be resilient, self-confident, decisive, enjoy solving problems and used to engaging with a wide variety of people with diverse viewpoints.

Given the range of the work and the flexibility around where and how it is completed, there may be no such thing as a typical day for a Planning Inspector carrying out specialist casework. You may work full time, for part of the week or for part of the year. you will be responsible for delivering your own workload enabling flexibility around your home life, subject to those aspects of the work which occur on weekdays. So long as you deliver your work, when and how you work is mostly up to you. But you will always have the support and assistance of colleagues when you need it.
