The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.

Within the Palaeoenvironments, Ice Sheets and Climate Change (PICC) team at BAS a particular focus of current research is on understanding glacial history and ice sheet sensitivity to climate change. This includes geological and geophysical data on the past response of polar ice sheets to changes in atmospheric and oceanographic temperature, volcanism and atmospheric CO2. By understanding these processes the team aims to improve forecasts of global sea levels and satellite data on ice mass loss.

There is a short-term vacancy in the NERC UK IODP-funded project ‘Depositional patterns and records in sediment drifts off the Antarctic Peninsula and West Antarctica: Seismic reflection and coring investigations in support of proposal 732-Full2’ of the PICC team for a science student to help us with this work for 12 months (26/10/2015-21/10/2016). You will assist marine geologists with work on sediment cores that were recovered from drifts on the West Antarctic continental rise in early 2015. The objectives of the project are to generate reliable and high-resolution age models for the cores and to reconstruct the dynamical behaviour of the Antarctic Peninsula and West Antarctic ice sheets during the Late Quaternary. You will be involved in core sampling and analyse grain size, pick calcareous foraminifera for isotope measurements and investigate the physical properties of the sediments. Previous experience of laboratory work on marine or lake sediment cores is essential and experience in microscopic studies on foraminifera is desirable.

Qualifications: You must have completed at least one year of a science degree, possess at least one science A level at grade C or above, and have attained a GCSE in mathematics. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an advanced level of working under laboratory conditions. The ability to work supportively and constructively in a closely-knit team is an essential requirement.

Duration: 12 Month Fixed Term appointment with an ideal start date of end of October 2015

Salary: Salary will be £18,190 per annum pro rata. We offer a generous benefits package including a pension scheme, free car parking, flexible working hours and 30 days annual leave per annum, pro rata.
