The future of the fish supper is no longer guaranteed. 90% of the world’s wild capture fisheries are already being fished at or above their maximum capacity yet our demand for seafood is set to increase. Aquaculture is rapidly expanding to fill that demand, but there are concerns about the sustainability of this growth.
 
Consumer awareness regarding farmed fish and the issues surrounding their production has been increasing in recent years, and it was this demand for knowledge that led to MCS publishing the Good Fish Guide in 2002.  Since then we have gone on to help hundreds of people understand more about the production of farmed seafood, and developed a number of tools to help consumers make sustainable fish purchases including our in-depth online Good Fish Guide, the handy pocket-sized version and the associated app for making decisions on the go.

We’ve teamed up with the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch® program (SFW) in order to support this work and we are looking for an Aquaculture Scientist to join our Fisheries & Aquaculture team.  This new post will research and maintain our vital information databases and support our partnership with Seafood Watch.

With your knowledge of the sustainable seafood movement, aquaculture production, and aquaculture management, you will be rigorous and detail-focused in researching new information and updating the existing knowledge on the state of global aquaculture production. You will use methodologies to produce assessments and ratings for Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch and the Marine Conservation Society Good Fish Guide

Key Skills
•    Experience of working in the aquaculture or seafood sector, or specialist knowledge of the aquaculture industry, aquaculture production standards and practices.
•    Proven ability to critically analyse information from diverse sources and develop complex science-based databases
•    Advanced communication skills – able to present complicated information clearly in a range of formats to a wide variety of technical and non-technical audiences
•    Able to show a disciplined approach to managing a workload which meets budgets and deadlines
