BirdLife International is seeking a dedicated and visionary Africa Forest Coordinator to spearhead our Forest Conservation Programme across the continent. This pivotal role is at the heart of our efforts to conserve critical forest landscapes, mobilize substantial funding for conservation initiatives, and foster a community of practice that leverages collective expertise and resources for maximum impact. This role offers an exciting opportunity to make a substantial impact on forest conservation across Africa, working with a dynamic international team and a network of partners. The Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Strategic Coordination: Guide the implementation of the BirdLife Forest Conservation Strategy in vital biodiversity hotspots, including the Guinean Forest of West Africa, Eastern Afromontane, and Madagascar & Indian Ocean Hotspots. Develop and execute a Forest Flagship Initiative for Africa, targeting significant conservation funding and stakeholder engagement.
  • Project Management and Development: Oversee forest conservation projects, ensuring strategic alignment, effective management, and the achievement of conservation goals. Innovate new projects to address conservation gaps and enhance funding opportunities.
  • Resource Mobilization: Drive fundraising efforts in collaboration with the Fundraising team, cultivating donor relationships, crafting compelling proposals, and establishing strategic partnerships to secure essential resources for forest conservation.
  • Advocacy and Promotion: Represent BirdLife in international forums, showcasing the achievements of our Forest Conservation Programme and sharing valuable lessons learned with a global audience.

Required skills, experience and qualifications:

  • Education: A Master’s degree in Conservation, Natural Resources Management, Environmental Economics, Forestry, or a related field.
  • Experience: Significant relevant experience in project/program management within the conservation sector, including significant experience in Africa.
  • Skills: Exceptional leadership, strategic planning, and networking abilities; proficiency in fundraising and proposal development; strong communication skills; and the capacity to work effectively under pressure.
  • Knowledge: A deep understanding of forest and biodiversity conservation, especially within the African context; familiarity with conservation finance mechanisms; and experience with GIS/remote sensing preferred.
  • Travel: Willingness to travel frequently, up to eight weeks per year.
  • Languages: Fluency in English is required, and working proficiency in French is highly desirable.
