The successful candidate will have a equivalent/higher degree in environmental sciences with at least 5 years post graduate experience in one or more of the main project areas.
The Africa Coordinator will be working with a small, highly motivated international team and reporting directly to the Communication and Capacity Building Programme Manager.
The position is based in Arendal, Norway. GRID-Arendal is a project funded organisation.
Responsibilities and tasks:
Actively fundraise for new projects and initiatives in Africa
Position GRID-Arendal as a key partner with UNEP and liaison with donors and partners
Initiate, develop and implement projects with UNEP DEWA’s Regional Coordinator for Africa
Develop and manage the implementation of capacity building projects related to the African Environmental Information Network, Africa Integrated Environment Assessments, Africa Environmental Outlook, including environmental atlases (UNEP DEWA) and GEO-5
Support to the development and implementation of the Global Adaptation Information Network Initiative.
Manage the Norwegian Peace Corps partnership agreements supported by FK Norway and in cooperation with UNEP.
Support to the poverty and environment portfolio and related areas
Preferred professional qualifications:
Master degree or equivalent/higher in environmental sciences, geography, agriculture, development studies or related field
Minimum 5 years international working experience in environmental information management or related fields, including working in developing countries
5 years working experience in project management, donor liaison, proposal writing
Experience in working with the United Nations system, especially UNEP
Experience in environmental impact assessments
Demonstrated ability to fundraise
Experience with tools and technologies to facilitate interpretation of environmental-related information systems
Communication skills, especially the use of visual communication
Good writing and editing skills
Demonstrated ability to work within a team and independently
Excellent language proficiency in English and preferably another UN language
Personal qualifications:
Interest in both organizational and technical solutions to improve access to environmental information
Good networking ability and diplomatic skills
Ability to work with/understand international cultures
Interest to work with national level partners, non-governmental organizations, the private sector and local communities
