Job description
This is a great time to join the growing Woodland Carbon Code team at Scottish Forestry and help scale up nature-based solutions to the climate emergency.
We’re looking for an enthusiastic, organised and experienced geospatial data analyst to join the team who manage the Woodland Carbon Code, the UK’s first globally endorsed carbon standard. As part of the team, you’ll be responsible for leading the creation, development and integration of geospatial data to ensure the Woodland Carbon Code continues to operate effectively and help shape the future of the programme.

The Woodland Carbon Code GIS Officer will be responsible for leading the creation, development and integration of geospatial data to ensure that the WCC continues to operate effectively. You will have opportunities to help shape the future of the WCC as it enters the next phase in the development of the woodland carbon market.
In the role of WCC GIS Officer, you will take the lead in coordinating the creation of geospatial data on the WCC and the integration of this data into map browsers and other applications. This will enable a smoother workflow for projects which register and validate to the WCC. You will also review how other geospatial datasets could be incorporated into the WCC to improve the workflow and functionality. You will work with the wider team to evaluate how spatial data can be used in the monitoring and assessment of woodland carbon stock and other metrics.

Main Duties
The WCC GIS Officer will play a key role in enabling GIS applications to enhance the efficiency of the processes for validating and verifying WCC projects, including:
WCC Operational Management
• Creation of geospatial data layers and maps for the WCC team.
• Production of reports to identify data anomalies using a variety of spatial and database querying techniques.
• Liaise with Project Developers to help identify and resolve any queries that arise during the digitising process.
• Provide GIS support and advice to the wider WCC team.
• Maintain WCC’s metadata is to required standards.
• Maintain awareness of data quality issues and problems and raise this with the WCC Carbon Markets Advisor.
WCC Development
• Development and maintenance of geospatial data for the WCC.
• Liaise with the Scottish Forestry GIS Team to improve the integration of WCC geospatial data within other applications such as map browsers and portals being developed by third parties.
• Review how other geospatial datasets can be incorporated into the WCC workflow to improve the workflow and functionality.
• Work with the wider WCC team, including the WCC Monitoring Advisor, to evaluate how spatial data can be used in the monitoring and assessment of woodland carbon stock and other metrics.
Communications
• Actively seek out views of users and consider how our use of geospatial data can be improved to meet our customers’ needs.
• Contribute to communication of updates or changes to our customers and providing written guidance/advice as required.
