Trusteeship Opportunity-
Finance Director

Are you a retired accountant or do you have financial skills that you would be willing to volunteer? Do you care about green issues and want to use your skills and experience to contribute to the local community. Being a charity trustee, a respected, recognised and responsible role, is an excellent opportunity for you to gain more experience at a strategic level and get involved with new networks and people.

Organisation background
Action 21 was established as a social enterprise in 1996 and registered in 2001 as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee (Reg no. 4150006) with a remit to promote sustainability in Warwickshire through positive practical projects. Our projects and activities focus on the issues of food, re-use, transport and energy and we are proud to have over 100 volunteers involved.

Funding comes from a range of sources including self-generated income, statutory funds, charitable trusts and membership fees. Surplus funds generated through our activities are ploughed back into projects to benefit the environment and local people

Principal Function of Trustee
Action 21 is governed by a board of trustees who carry out their role unpaid, on a voluntary basis. While not responsible for the day-to-day running of the organisation, as the Finance director, you will have and must accept the ultimate responsibility for directing the fiscal affairs of Action 21, ensuring that it has a clear strategy and that it remains true to its original vision and complies with all necessary rules and legal obligations.

As a trustee, you should use any specific knowledge or experience you have to help the board of trustees reach sound decisions. This may involve scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, and providing advice and guidance requested by the board on new initiatives or other issues relevant to the area of Action 21’s work.

The list below is a guide to the types of activities that you may be required to carry out.
• Attend board of trustees meetings (every 6 weeks)
• Be involved in the overall management and decision-making in Action 21
• To ensure the proper investment of the organisation's funds
• Monitor the steering group for the theme which you represent, reporting back to the board as required
• Be an advocate for Action 21 in the community
• Attend high profile or civic events as a representative of Action 21

Benefits
• Being a trustee of a charity is a well respected, recognised, and responsible role in the community
• It will give you an excellent opportunity to apply your skills, gain more experience at a strategic level, and get involved with new networks and people
• You will be able to make a significant difference to a cause you care about
• It’s a chance to assist Action 21 with high priority work

Skills/ Experience sought
We are seeking someone who can offer skills relevant to financial management and play a strategic leadership role within the organisation. Experience in legal matters, fundraising, and public relations is also hugely welcome.

You will have an ability to think creatively, ability to work effectively as a member of a team, and a willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to the duties as a trustee.

Minimum age requirement: 18 years

Time commitment required
The minimum commitment for this post is four hours per month including one monthly meeting. You will be required to attend one training session / away day per year.

Becoming an Action 21 Trustee entails providing a strategic lead, which is not compatible with short term involvement. We do not wish to be prescriptive about the length of commitment; however we suggest you do not take on this role unless you feel you can commit for at least 1-3 years.

Training and Expenses
Induction will follow periodic review sessions. It will be your responsibility to highlight any training needs you feel you may have with the chair of trustees.

Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Location
Community meeting rooms and work from home with occasional work at the Action 21 offices in Leamington Spa at:
• The Recycle Warehouse, Princes Drive,
• The Re-useful Centre, Sydenham
• East Lodge, Jephson Gardens
