Senior Campaigner (Pangolins)

We are recruiting for a Senior Campaigner to run a new three year project to combat international pangolin trade from sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, to markets in SE Asia and China.

We’d looking for someone who is committed to ending trade and demand for pangolins. They must have proven knowledge of wildlife conservation and trade and proven experience of project, personnel and budget management. Experience of working in the African conservation sector is highly desirable.

Main purpose of position

The successful applicant will be responsible for the day-to-day implementation of the project, budget management, project monitoring and evaluation, and donor reporting. In consultation with other relevant EIA staff, they will coordinate desk-based and field research activity with partners in Africa and Asia. They will be our primary spokesperson for the project at relevant meetings and with the media. They will liaise with other relevant EIA staff and partners to prepare and disseminate communications and briefings for different audiences (law enforcement, policy and media). The successful applicant will be expected to travel to Africa and Asia.

Essential

Knowledge

• Educated to a degree level in a relevant field e.g. environmental sciences, conservation, wildlife crime/criminology
• Knowledge of illegal wildlife trade and solutions for combating wildlife crime

Experience

• 5 years experience in a campaigning organisation, or in field conservation
• Proven budget and personnel management experience
• Proven experience in strategic planning
• Proven experience in project management, monitoring & evaluation

Skills

• Strong interpersonal, communication and time-management skills.
• Proven ability to conduct detailed targeted research projects and tasks
• Demonstrable report writing and editing skills
• Strong advocacy skills, including the ability to clearly explain and justify rationale and recommendations
• Ability to travel at short notice, including to potentially challenging environments
• Ability to work under pressure
• Legal right to work in the UK
• Fully proficient in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook and other applications

Desirable

• Experience of working in sub-Saharan Africa
• Experience of camera work (film and photography)
• Knowledge of the workings of the UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and other relevant multi-lateral agreements
• Experience of working with people from a variety of cultures and countries
• Qualifications or experience of project management practice e.g. Open Standards for the Practice of Conservation, PRINCE 2
