An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, meticulous and passionate
Air Quality Scientist to join Greenpeace, the world’s most iconic and determined campaigning organisation.
This post is based at the Greenpeace Research Laboratories (GRL) in Exeter.
Greenpeace is an independent global campaigning organisation that acts to change attitudes and behaviour, in order to protect and conserve the environment and promote peace. To maintain our independence and enable us to campaign without fear of compromise, we never accept corporate or government donations, relying wholly on donations from our individual supporters.
As part of a big push to increase support for our causes, we're looking for a highly motivated Air Quality Scientist to work closely with other GRL staff to provide the Greenpeace Coal and Air Pollution project with scientific advice and analytical support, including advice on design and communication of campaign projects. You will also keep abreast of current scientific thinking and literature with special reference to air pollution arising from the use of fossil fuels, its impacts and its regulatory control.
In this pivotal role, you will contribute to the design of field sampling projects and help carry them out, plus report on and interpret results of such projects. You will also assist in the broader quality control functions of the GRL by participating in the review of documents with a special focus on air quality, air pollution and consequences for health and environment.
This vital position will also see you:
- Help increase Greenpeace’s scientific credibility and connection to the scientific community in the fields of air pollution and health impact assessment
- Research, in depth, particular scientific subjects of interest to the Greenpeace Coal & Air Pollution project, and prepare technical briefings and work for publication
- Prepare air quality and health impact analyses of existing and proposed coal-fired power plants
- Analyse air pollution episodes and prepare localized briefings on sources of urban air pollution
- Support field work on air pollution
Holding a PhD in a scientific discipline, preferably related to air quality, you will also have strong knowledge of scientific areas, including in-depth knowledge relevant to air quality monitoring, modelling and/or assessment. You will also have an understanding of a campaigning or similar organisation, with an awareness of the strategic use of science in campaigning. The ability to carry out air quality modelling using suitable chemical-transport models and an interest in the socio-political context and application of science are also essential.
In addition, you will have:
- Strong inter-personal and communication skills, verbal and written, with the ability to convey scientific information to non-scientific individuals/groups, including public speaking and scientific conferences
- The ability to prioritise and organise own work and to work as part of a cross-disciplinary team
- Experience of developing and maintaining administrative systems
