Description  

 Stop Ivory is a UK registered Charity, and serves as the initial Secretariat to the African Government led, Elephant Protection Initiative (EPI). Stop Ivory works in close collaboration and strong partnerships with governments, NGOs, IGOs and the private sector to deliver a mechanism to stop the killing of elephants, stop the trafficking and demand for ivory; and to realise a secure and stable future for elephant populations and people across Africa. 

Stop Ivory does this by providing technical and financial support to African Elephant range States and their NGO partners implement the African Elephant Action Plan under the Elephant Protection Initiative (EPI); and to meet international obligations relating to ivory management under CITES.

Position Objective:   To oversee and coordinate Stop Ivory’s Implementation Activities across Africa, to support NGO and Government partners, and to manage the Stop Ivory Grant Disbursement Mechanism for funding National Elephant Action Plans. This role is the key technical advisor to the CEO.

Principle responsibilities: The principle activities for which the Operations Director will be responsible include:

a) Coordination of Stop Ivory’s Implementation activities

Work with Governments and partners, engaging and managing consultants where necessary, to:

  • Plan and deliver the inventory of ivory stockpiles and implementation of the Stockpile Management Systems. This may include supporting the revision of standard operating procedures.
  • Support work relating to the closing of domestic ivory markets.
  • Support the development of National Elephant Action Plans (NEAP).
  • Oversee the embedding and delivery of the NEAPs within each country, specifically the priority projects.
  • Provide technical oversight of the implementation activities including: planning and method development; technology development; data analysis and verification; and reporting.
  • Provide administrative management of the Implementation Activities, working with the Stop Ivory team, for budgeting, financial reporting, development of contract and terms of reference for consultants, and travel schedules.

b)    Coordination of the NEAP grant disbursement mechanism

  • Coordinate and facilitate the Stop Ivory Grant system including: reception of proposals; proposal review by the technical board, proposal approval by the Stop Ivory Board, and subsequent Grant Agreement provision.
  • Working with Stop Ivory Executive Team, support the monitoring and evaluation of countries on the implementation and progress of achieving grant objectives.
  • Monitor and collate grantee reporting; provide summaries to the Stop Ivory board and technical review board.

c)     Support the EPI Implementation Board

  • Work with the Stop Ivory Executive Team and Conservation International to organize the EPI Implementation Board meetings, and drafting of EPI Governance documents.

Other responsibilities

  • Working with Stop Ivory Executive Team support the preparation of proposals and grant applications for Stop Ivory work, and subsequent reporting.
  • Provide input into thought-leadership documents and research commissioned by Stop Ivory and partner organizations.
  • Represent Stop Ivory at relevant meetings/workshops/conferences.
  • Other responsibilities as agreed from time to time.

 

Deliverables

  • For each Implementation Activity:
    • Inventory: work plans, MOUs/terms of reference, budgets, Inventory data and report.
    • National Elephant Action Plan: work plans, budgets, MOUs/terms of reference, and final NEAP document.
    • NEAP coordinator: work plan and workshop reports.
    • NEAP Grant Disbursement:
      • NEAP proposals and related paper work (including review documentation and grant agreements)
      • Up-to-date NEAP Grant database

 

EPI Implementation Board:

  • Meeting Agenda and minutes

 

Reporting and Communication

  • Report to the Stop Ivory Chief Executive Officer.
  • Working directly with Stop Ivory executive team, board and partners.
  • Supervising consultants as required.

 

Necessary attributes and qualifications

  • At least 6 years of experience working in field conservation. Preferably within different countries in Africa.  
  • Ability to travel in Africa and worldwide if required.
  • Current and detailed working knowledge and understanding of elephant crisis.
  • Experience in writing technical reports, grant reporting and proposals for private and institutional funders.
  • Languages: professional working ability in English. Other languages including French strongly preferred.
  • Team player and experience of working in partnerships.
  • Computer literate.
