Description

We are currently seeking a Science Programme Intern to contribute to the programme and the Centre’s work on biodiversity observations with a particular focus on exploring how satellite remote sensing can be used to map and monitor plant traits.

UNEP-WCMC works to provide authoritative information about biodiversity and ecosystem services in a way that is useful to decision makers who are driving change in environment and development policy.

The Group on Earth Observation Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON) is in the process of reforming the acquisition, coordination and delivery of biodiversity information and services to end users, in particular to decision-makers. Underpinning this initiative is the GEO BON’s effort to develop a candidate set of Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs), which provide guidance to observation systems as to how to measure key aspects of biodiversity status and trends. UNEP WCMC is leading the Remote Sensing for Essential Biodiversity Variables (RS4EBV) project which seeks to map and monitor a suite of variables which describe plant functional traits and which will pave the way for a global plant functional diversity index.

As a Science Programme intern, you will contribute to the ground segment of the RS4EBV project by enhancing the plant trait database being used to drive the assumptions behind the project’s modelling strategy. This will involve assessing data availability/gaps in the trait database, conducting a literature review to judge what components of Functional Diversity can be calculated with the trait data, while identifying additional sources of trait data to expand the network of test sites used in the project.

We are looking for an Intern to start as soon as possible for 8-12 weeks. If you are interested in this placement, please submit a CV and covering letter through the link below by the 3rd June 2016. Please note an application form is not required with this placement.

Interviews will be held on the 10th June 2016.

Please note that this is not a UN post.

WCMC is a UK charity, based in Cambridge, which supports the United Nations Environment Programme. We work in collaboration with UNEP, under the banner of UNEP-WCMC. Our mission is to evaluate and highlight the many values of biodiversity and put authoritative biodiversity knowledge at the centre of decision-making. Since our establishment in the 1970s, the Centre has been at the forefront of the compilation, management, analysis and dissemination of global biodiversity information, and has an outstanding record of achievement.
