Are you looking for an opportunity to build your countryside management career?

Established in 1988, the Downlands Partnership delivers a high quality countryside management service to 6 local authorities in North East Surrey and the adjoining London Boroughs. At the core of the service is the ability to inspire, motivate and empower volunteers to deliver small scale environmental enhancements; habitat management and public access improvements throughout the area. Last year we generated more than 12,000 volunteer hours.

The Partnership also delivers a conservation grazing programme to maintain the chalk grassland habitat, which is a feature of the area. The work of the partnership is supported by the Downlands Trust, an independent charitable trust run by local volunteers.

The Downlands Partnership is one of 3 countryside management partnerships hosted by Surrey County Council, which have been brought together into one team in 2012. We are now working to deliver a 5-year business plan which envisages that in future the partnerships will:

  • Operate in a more efficient and businesslike way
  • Achieve greater financial stability
  • Reduce reliance on public sector funding
  • Attract and retain a wide cross-section of people as volunteers

The vision for the service is ‘A flexible and responsive county-wide shared countryside management service working across boundaries and delivering exceptional value for money’. As the Senior Project Officer, you will drive the delivery of this exciting vision for the Downlands Partnership.

Through personal example, you will support innovation, manage risk-taking and performance so as to enable continuous improvement of service delivery. You will be a role model to staff and volunteers working on the projects for all the organisation’s values, promoting an open, honest, collaborative culture that delivers ongoing improvements.

Flexible working is supported where possible, laptop and mobile supplied. 24 days annual leave, local government salary-related pension offered as well as the option to join the car lease scheme.

To be shortlisted for interview your application will clearly evidence:

  • Experience of coordinating and leading a team to deliver a countryside work programme, ensuring it supports wider partner, community and council priorities.
  • Experience of project development and management including costing and financial control.
  • A successful track record of partnership working.
  • Up to date knowledge of ecology and countryside management.
  • Experience of managing a conservation grazing programme.
  • The ability to attract, inspire and motivate volunteers.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to build sound relationships with a wide range of people.
