Duration of Contract:           Two year fixed term contract

Location:                              The position is based at FFI’s offices in Cambridge, UK with frequent visits for programme sites in Guinea, Liberia, DRC and other locations as required

Founded in 1903, Fauna & Flora International (FFI) is the world’s longest-established international conservation organisation. Our vision is to create a sustainable future for the planet where biodiversity is conserved by the people living closest to it. We aim to do this through the conservation of threatened species and ecosystems worldwide, choosing solutions that are sustainable, based on sound science and take account of human needs. We have become a trusted entity in the world of conservation. Today FFI is active in over 40 countries.

Working closely with local partners, FFI’s Africa Programme currently supports operations in 13 countries in West, Central, East and Southern Africa, and is implementing a range of projects focused on both terrestrial and marine species and habitat conservation, biodiversity planning, protected area management, institutional development and capacity building, sustainable use and community-focused wildlife management initiatives.

To achieve its mission in Africa, FFI uses different approaches to work with and alongside local partners to focus on the sustainable use and management of natural resources as a means to effective conservation in the long-term. In all its projects in Africa, FFI seeks to:

  • Build and support local partnerships with African conservation and community development organisations
  • Strengthen institutions to bring sustainability and added value to projects
  • Maintain long term presence and relationships
  • Reconcile conservation goals with the needs of local people
  • Incorporate sound science in decision-making

FFI currently operates in Guinea, Liberia and DRC, and supports the operations of partners in several other countries within the region. The West & Central Africa programme carries out the Africa strategy to support local people and organisations to use natural resources sustainably; conserving species, habitats, ecosystems and the services they provide, and at the same time striving for increased well-being for those people. Within this region and more widely across FFI and the Africa Programme, we also engage with business believing that one of the most effective ways to protect biodiversity and ecosystem services is to work with businesses that have the potential to pose the greatest risks, in order to help minimise their environmental impact.

The focus of the Programmes in Guinea and Liberia is the remaining and intact section of Upper Guinean Forest, rich in endemic and endangered species. These forests are at risk from extreme and immediate threats, such as slash-and-burn agricultural expansion, mining and poaching. Recently, communities in both countries have been faced with further challenges to their livelihoods presented by the biggest outbreak of Ebola HV to date.

The Programme in DRC currently focuses on the protection of the Critically Endangered Grauer’s Gorilla, working to support local people to effectively manage two community reserves, ensuring a viable wildlife population and healthy ecosystem, sustainably used by empowered local men and women. The two reserves cover 260,000ha of forest between Maiko National Park and Kahuzi-Biega National Park; all located within the Maiko-Tayna-Kahuzi-Biega Landscape – a 10 million ha forest area.

FFI is seeking a highly experienced and motivated conservation professional to fulfil the role of Senior Programme Manager, West & Central Africa, assuming responsibility to oversee FFI operations in the region (currently Guinea, Liberia and DRC).

The successful candidate will have strong operational and managerial experience in conservation project and programme management, including project design, development and fundraising, technical and financial management and reporting of large funds and grants, preferably with statutory or multilateral/bilateral donors and preferably in Africa, as well as a commitment to organisational and national legal compliance.

Strong leadership and people management skills are essential to the role to ensure a professional and motivated team that delivers effectively against project aims, objectives and timelines.  The role also requires a skilled and credible communicator, who is confident in developing and managing relationships with partner organisations and relevant stakeholders, including donors and funders.

The successful applicant will also have substantial experience in the field of conservation. S/he will enjoy working in a dynamic environment where the ability to respond swiftly and thoroughly to challenges and opportunities is paramount. Spoken and written fluency in English and French is essential.
