Description

Are you an experienced ecologist with excellent communication skills and the ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders? Can you lead the Seabird Monitoring Programme during a period of change and be instrumental in delivering the next breeding seabirds census of Britain and Ireland?

The Seabird Monitoring Programme (SMP) is an annual monitoring programme of the 25 species of seabird that breed in Britain and Ireland. It aims to ensure sample data on seabird breeding numbers and breeding success are collected to enable assessment of their conservation status. Breeding seabird censuses of Britain and Ireland are a key component of this program, with three being completed since 1969. A new census, ‘Seabirds Count’, is currently underway and aims to complete fieldwork by 2019.

We’re looking for candidates with knowledge and experience in: animal ecology, especially seabird population and conservation biology; monitoring programme design; and survey techniques, sampling regimes and their statistical validity to meet objectives. The position also requires core skills including interpersonal, communication and leadership ability; and expertise in time management, team working, and evidence-based decision making. We’d like to hear how you can provide these specialist and core competencies and are also interested in any additional skills or knowledge you can offer to JNCC. This is a fixed term appointment initially for 6 months, with possibility of extension up to 1 year.
