Description

Natural England, the Government's adviser for the natural environment in England, is looking for a Project Manager for the Thames Basin Heaths Partnership.

Natural England are here to secure a healthy natural environment for people to enjoy, where wildlife is protected and England’s traditional landscapes are safeguarded for future generations.

Key Responsibilities

You will manage the Thames Basin Heaths Partnership, also known as the Thames Basin Heaths Strategic Access Management and Monitoring (SAMM) project, one of the measures being used to avoid and mitigate against the impacts of housing development on the Thames Basin Heaths (TBH) Special Protection Area (SPA). The TBH SPA, designated for breeding populations of Dartford warbler, nightjar and woodlark, extends over 8,200 hectares within Berkshire, Hampshire and Surrey.

The Thames Basin Heaths Partnership, hosted by Natural England’s Thames Team, is fully funded from developer contributions, and is overseen by the TBH Joint Strategic Partnership Board (JSPB), a body comprising 11 local authorities, and Hampshire and Surrey County Councils. Working in partnership with Natural England colleagues, the TBH local authorities, SPA land owners and managers, and other stakeholders, you will manage the project to achieve its objective of helping to protect the SPA from recreational pressures arising from new housing development.

You will be responsible for developing the project’s strategic documents, commissioning surveys and research, and managing the project budget and contracts, ensuring financial reporting is undertaken in accordance with Natural England’s policies and procedures. You will also have functional management responsibility for the project’s Education and Communication Officer, and Senior Warden, and have oversight to the work of the access management warden team.

You will need to use good judgement to identify, manage and resolve key issues, and have the experience and skills necessary for managing a complex project with staffing and budgetary responsibilities. You will also be working as part of an integrated Area Team, alongside Natural England colleagues involved in both related and other areas of Natural England’s work, and will need to work closely with them to ensure the effective delivery of Natural England’s objectives.

The location is flexible, but you must be able to travel to the offices within the area and meet local partners regularly.  The Thames Basin Heaths Special Protected Area SPA and the location of offices and local partners fall within parts of Berkshire, Hampshire and Surrey.
