The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH) is part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and is the UK's Centre of Excellence for integrated research in terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems and their interaction with the atmosphere. Working in partnership with the research community, policy makers, industry and society, CEH undertakes cutting edge research to deliver world class solutions to the most complex environmental challenges facing humankind. CEH has an annual turnover of £35 million, and employs staff across four sites; the headquarters is at Wallingford with further sites at Bangor, Edinburgh and Lancaster.

About the role

We are seeking a suitable applicant to lead on the design, construction, installation and maintenance of field instrumentation and data logging systems using a wide variety of environmental sensors. You will be responsible for translating scientific monitoring requirements into robust low-maintenance long-term automated sensor networks, supported by the dynamic and responsive multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers in the Land Surface Flux Measurements Group at CEH Wallingford. You will support the full range of CEH science, with typical applications in river flow gauging; sediment monitoring; automatic sampling; weather stations and greenhouse gas flux measurements using eddy covariance, and advanced soil moisture monitoring systems.

About you

A 2:1 degree or equivalent qualification is essential. You must have previous experience with field data loggers, environmental sensors and their maintenance as well as experience of experience of interfacing both analogue and digital sensors to data loggers, and data logger programming. Experience in configuring and deploying telemetry systems (GPRS/mobile and satellite) is highly desirable.

Preferably you should have experience of quality management systems, such as ISO9001, and have meticulous attention to detail in your work and its documentation. Some experience of working to performance targets is preferable and you will report to management on data capture and sensor network performance. Experience of managing resource budgets and project management, as well as excellent delegation skills would also be beneficial to the role.

You must have a full driving licence and be willing to regularly spend some nights away from home when attending field sites across the UK, with some 2-3 week overseas visits. You will naturally have experience of fieldwork outdoors often alone at remote UK field sites and overseas with local collaborators.

Eligibility to apply

CEH can only apply for a work permit in cases where there are no suitably qualified or experienced resident workers; otherwise applicants should normally be resident in the UK or a national of the European Union.
