Description  

The Devon, Cornwall and isles of Scilly Area Team comprises over 100 dedicated people delivering marine and land based conservation with partners to support environmental outcomes hand in hand with economic growth. Our patch stretches for 200 miles from the Isles of Scilly to Minehead. We have two National Parks - Dartmoor and Exmoor - as well as our third major upland area Bodmin Moor. Our two World Heritage sites celebrate our mining heritage and the rich geology of the Jurassic Coast. The outstanding landscapes of the area are reflected in 7 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We own and manage some special places as National Nature Reserves (NNRs) on Bodmin and Dartmoor. Our Lizard NNR has a host of nationally rare plants including wild relatives of commercial crops.


Job description

Our Lead Advisers are at the forefront of driving our Conservation Strategy translating our strategic ambition into locally relevant outcomes. Our lead Advisers work with partners, stakeholders and land managers to deliver outcomes aimed at creating resilient landscape, putting people at the heart of the environment and growing the natural capital. All our Lead Advisers are team players and must be flexible in contributing to delivery across the Area Team. Initially the role will lead on Agri-Environment scheme and Protected Site work on Dartmoor. We are looking for a flexible and adaptable individual with effective communication skills who will be able to lead and progress projects, developing shared outcomes with a range of partners that deliver a real difference to people and the natural environment across the Area Team.

    • Demonstrate an understanding of current environmental issues and relate these to your work (e.g. climate change, natural capital approach)

    • Be able to prioritise often competing opportunities for delivering different environmental outcomes and interpret strategic direction into local circumstances.

    • Understand and apply relevant legislation, policy and governance frameworks to your work

    • Recognise, identify and interpret environmental features such as priority habitats and SSSI features within a landscape and how they interact

  • Communicating effectively - Practitioner

    • Use clear and appropriate language, communication styles and techniques that engage your audience

    • Collaborate, negotiate and influence in a well-informed and timely way (in line with customer service standards) to achieve pragmatic outcomes.

  • Technical/specialist knowledge/qualifications


    Description

    • A degree or equivalent ecological or environmental qualification/experience

    • Good communication skills including the ability to explain technical information to a range of audiences and engage with local stakeholders i.e. press articles, stakeholder workshops, newsletters, promotional campaigns, use of social media.

    • Experience of leading external communications on key projects, to raise awareness and support from stakeholders for their delivery.

    • Experience in effective partnership working.

    • Experience in identifying opportunities to do things differently to secure environment improvements.

    • Experience in managing complex and contentious work.

    • Experience in managing a full workload with continually changing and often competing demands on your time.

    • Good knowledge of environmental legislation including policies and procedures relating to SSSI’s, European sites, designated landscapes and protected species;

    • An understanding of Agri-Environment schemes, their objectives and management;

    • Strong ecological skills- able to identify and advise on habitat and species management for a variety of upland, lowland and coastal habitats.

    • Some understanding of urban, urban fringe and development issues including some knowledge of Town & Country Planning legislation is desirable but not essential.

    • A knowledge of upland farming systems and ecology would be an advantage but not essential

    • Some understanding of wildlife licensing and European Protected Species is desirable but not essential.

    • Competence in the use of IT, including ability to work with spreadsheets, databases & presentation packages (experience of Geographic Information Systems is desirable but not essential)


    A full, current driving license is essential.
