The successful applicant will work to implement the NatureSpace Partnership South Midlands great crested newt (GCN) district licence scheme within the planning functions of four local authorities in Oxfordshire (South Oxfordshire District Council, Vale of White Horse District Council, Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council) and will be the main point of contact for all aspects of the GCN licencing scheme within those authorities.

 

This is an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate with an environmental degree, or someone looking to kickstart their career in ecology. The role would suit a candidate who is looking to develop their skills and experience in this innovative area of protected species conservation.

 

Countryside Officer Responsibilities:

 

• Raise general awareness of the scheme externally with developers and ecologists through the council’s websites, guidance documents and other publications

• Raise awareness of the scheme internally to all appropriate staff and provide training as necessary

• Ensure relevant planning staff are familiar with the scheme and the process (dealing with NatureSpace certificates and reports)

• Provide specific advice to Planning Officers on any NatureSpace Partnership report

• Ensure that recommendations in NatureSpace Reports are translated appropriately into planning conditions

• Monitor developer compliance with any newt-related planning conditions

• Provide a point of contact for newt-related matters for NatureSpace Partnership, the Newt Conservation Partnership, Natural England as required

 

Countryside Officer Requirements:

 

• Degree or diploma in ecology or related discipline – or equivalent voluntary or professional experience in an ecology related role

• Hold a full and current driving licence and daily use of a car insured for business purposes

• Knowledgeable about great crested newts – preferably with some firsth and field experience of surveying together with an understanding of mitigation, compensation, and licensing

• Knowledge of European Protected Species legislation

• Awareness of planning process, legislation and policy

• Excellent communication, skills (both written and verbal)

• Able to prioritise own workload

• Experienced in the use of Microsoft Office suite and GIS software
