Salary range:                         £30,000-34,000 per annum, dependent on skills and experience

Start Date:                             December 2016

Duration of Contract:           One-year fixed-term contract (with potential to extend subject to business need and funding availability)

Location:                                Fauna & Flora International (FFI), Cambridge, UK

Founded in 1903, Fauna & Flora International (FFI) is the world’s longest established international conservation organisation. Our vision is to create a sustainable future for the planet where biodiversity is conserved by the people living closest to it. We aim to do this through the conservation of threatened species and ecosystems worldwide, choosing solutions that are sustainable, based on sound science and take account of human needs. We have become a trusted entity in the world of conservation. Today FFI is active in over 40 countries.

United for Wildlife (UfW) is an unprecedented partnership between Conservation International, Fauna & Flora International (FFI), IUCN, The Nature Conservancy (TNC), The Royal Foundation, Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), WWF and Zoological Society of London (ZSL). Convened by HRH The Duke of Cambridge, our aim is two-fold, to scale up the response to global conservation crises and to engage a younger generation in conservation. As a first step, UfW has chosen to tackle the illegal wildlife trade.

FFI is seeking qualified candidates for the position of WILDLABS.NET Community Manager.  WILDLABS.NET is a project of the UfW Technology Council, seeking to manage and scale up a community of practice that supports conservationists, technologists, engineers, data scientists and others to collaborate on the development and implementation of technology-enabled solutions to the most pressing conservation challenges we face.

As Community Manager, you will develop and implement a community growth strategy to identify and engage key stakeholders and manage the community’s direction and development to contribute tangible value to the objective of democratising access to the right information, tools and resources to combat wildlife crime and other critical threats to biodiversity.

You will establish and develop engagement in the community, facilitating collaboration and the sharing of ideas and creating an accessible, friendly, vibrant and professional environment.  You will manage online content, creating content directly and soliciting content from others and will identify and work closely with digital agencies and suppliers to maintain and develop sites. In addition, you will facilitate opportunities for in person collaboration, including workshops, hackathons and meet-ups for conservation technologists.  You will establish effective working relationships with the technical leads across the UfW partnership, support stakeholder meetings as required, and report regularly on KPIs, metrics and community impact, submitting recommendations and implementing solutions to meet the UfW partnership and community objectives.

Whilst you will be physically located at FFI’s global headquarters in Cambridge, you will work closely with the United for Wildlife campaign team in London and the UfW Technology Council, comprised of representatives from each of the organisations in the coalition.

You will be based in The David Attenborough Building, where the University of Cambridge and nine conservation organisations have collaborated to create the Cambridge Conservation Initiative (CCI) – the largest grouping of nature conservation organisations and university researchers in the world.  You will thus benefit from an intellectually stimulating environment to drive debate and knowledge exchange; exceptional support and facilities; access to a large pool of expertise in the environmental and social sciences; and excellent links to a wide array of institutions, organisations and networks worldwide. Throw a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem and a fast-growing technology cluster into the mix and you will appreciate what an exciting platform you have from which to grow the community.

You will have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in an environmental science, social science or technology-related discipline, experience deploying a range of technologies for conservation or wildlife research and up-to-date knowledge and understanding of technology innovations and trends and their potential application to improve conservation.  You will have a proven track record in developing and maintaining vibrant online communities, together with experience in developing and delivering compelling communications materials, including online content.  In addition, you will be experienced in facilitating in person meetups and connections. A natural communicator, you will be able to communicate technical information effectively to relevant audiences and to present with confidence and credibility.  Fluency in spoken and written English is essential, as are excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to seek out and harness the views and contributions of others.  Above all, you will be driven by your ambition to apply your skills and experience to improve the outlook for threatened species and habitats around the globe.
