Description

NERC is the UK's leading funder of environmental science. Our scientists study and monitor the physical, chemical, and biological processes on which our planet and life itself depends – from pole to pole, from the deep Earth and oceans to the atmosphere and space. Many research programmes involve collaborations with national and international partners to tackle large-scale environmental science challenges, including those faced by developing countries.

A new and important role has opened within NERC for an Associate Director in the Research and Skills Directorate, reporting to the Director, Research and Skills. This Associate Director will have, or will develop, deep knowledge of the full remit of the Directorate, namely core and strategic research programme generation and delivery, investment into talent and skills, and research partnerships including international activities. The Associate Director will be a core member of a team, leading on specific projects collaboratively with other members of the leadership team, to advance Directorate strategy and business needs.

As well as research, innovation, and training supported from the NERC core budget, this role will shape and influence creating exciting opportunities from cross-UKRI funds for interdisciplinary programmes that enable environmental researchers to lead and collaborate in major projects to advance knowledge, develop talent, and have significant potential for delivering impact for society.

As an associate Director you will:

  • Provide strategic senior leadership for the Directorate
  • Have a rotating remit to deliver project-specific activity of strategic importance to the R&S directorate
  • Work with other leaders, and external members, to identify and recommend potential research and innovation investments.
  • Be responsible for the planning, delivery and resources for relevant UKRI-NERC priorities and outcomes.
  • Be a skilled NERC professional lead, policy lead, and key contact for the business, public policy and third sector engagement.
  • Lead for UKRI-NERC in relevant engagement, partnerships and activities
  • Develop key relationships with international partners to identify mutual interests, influence global agendas and enable teamwork.

You will need:

  • Excellent leadership and organisational change skills, with ability to inspire, motivate and develop capability to deliver high-quality outcomes
  • A deep knowledge of developing organisational strategy, policy, expert domains, and stakeholder engagement
  • Ability to build and maintain strong partnerships and working relationships
  • Strategic thinker, able to persuade and negotiate
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Understanding of the environmental science community that applies to NERC, or evidence you can quickly acquire this.
  • A degree level qualification or equivalent, preferably in environmental sciences.
