The Ramblers is looking to recruit a skilled and experienced individual to lead on Area support activities for the Ramblers through leading and managing a small staff team of Area Support Officers (ASOs).

Key responsibilities include, setting the direction for Area Support, leading and managing the Area Support Team (AST). The ASM will be the key point of contact for Area Chairs and Secretaries and will be responsible for helping Areas to lead, coordinate and develop activities across their areas.

The AST will act as relationship managers, signposting Area queries to the relevant Ramblers staff and helping Areas to realise opportunities, resolve issues at local level, report on their impact and provide essential data.

The post holder will ensure the ASOs are able to provide a connected network of support to Area committees, to help them to recruit volunteers into Area roles, to support volunteers in gaining new skills, and to support Areas and Groups to grow their membership and succession plan.

The ASM will develop an area support strategy to help Areas to flourish on behalf of the Ramblers and will cover topics such as communication, alignment, best practice sharing, training provision, governance, fundraising, reporting and impact evaluation.

The ASM will also chair the staff and trustee Area Working Group, organise staff and trustee attendance at the annual Area General Meetings, produce the monthly Area Chairs and Secretaries newsletter and provide progress reports to the Senior Management Team (SMT) and the Board of Trustees on a regular basis.

The AST will provide in-depth support to Areas which are in abeyance to help them to become functional again. The AST will also provide Inductions for all new Area Chairs and Secretaries.

The ASM will also ensure that the description of an area, and area volunteer role descriptions, remain up to date and in line with best practice

The role of the Area Support Manager is to help build Area capacity and resource, ensuring that Areas are able to deliver both leadership and compliance responsibilities whilst maintaining quality standards

Essential Requirements include:

  • Experience of designing and delivering account management, training and support.
  • Experience of working with volunteers and proven volunteer management skills.
  • Empathy and an ability to develop strong, collaborative working relationships.
  • Line management and leading geographically dispersed teams.
  • Ability to create fully functioning team and understand own role within a team
  • Strong diplomatic, negotiating and persuasive skills. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Team player with flexibility of style and approach to meet the needs of differing audiences.
  • Ability to analyse data, pay attention to detail and present reports.
  • Good IT skills and an ability to support others to do so programmes.
  • Proven project and change management experience.
  • Ability to see the big picture and develop an ambitious – but sustainable – strategy.
  • Proven track record of achieving objectives, meeting deadlines and being proactive.
  • Strong co-ordination, planning and organisational skills.
  • Resilient with the ability to work under pressure and to tight and competing deadlines.
  • Ability to travel and to spend some evenings and weekends away from home.
